- Creality 3 V3 SE -
Four years of light/occasional use, a couple failures.
- The SD card reader spring gets misaligned.
- The plastic top layer of the removable plate will crack.
- The printer will brick itself.
Important remarks
The SD card reader is smaller than the hole it's in, this means BE CAREFUL! if the card doesn't line up don't smush it in. You insert the SD card with its metal points facing up.
After enough use, the spring which lets you know the SD card has been fully inserted gets misaligned. This makes it so the "click" and resistance you feel and hear that lets you know the card is fully inserted won't be present. The SD card slot is still usable but you need to be gentle to avoid damaging the reader when inserting the card.
If your printer somehow bricks itself, which can happen any time, the screen will be stuck on the default blue wallpaper and the creality boot logo won't show. The only way to fix this is to flash new firmware on the screen and the motherboard, bummer, I know.
Flashing the motherboard requires putting an SD card in the side of the printer (see SD card reader section above) formatted to FAT with the appropriate firmware. This is VERY important, guides will tell you to format the SD card to FAT32, DON'T do that! instead format it to regular FAT.
I cannot stress this enough since this is the only reason why I was able to unbrick this printer, it would simpy not recognize any other format. You can follow the rest of the firmware flashing guides normally and it should be back up and running.
Lastly, the micro SD card slot to flash the screen firmware is on the side of the screen assembly, just push up a bit and gently lift it off.
The black plastic top layer of the removable plate will eventually crack if you use plastic or metal plate scrapers. The underside is made of thin sheet metal so it's very pliable and strong but over time, the top plastic layer will weaken and be at risk of seperating from that sheet metal.
To postpone this failure I recommend always waiting for the bed temperature to sufficiently cooldown so that the plate material won't be in a vulnerable state. Alternatively, avoid plate scrapers and just bend the plate.
